How to Replace an audi a1 car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The audi car key cover is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues with your car. It's an essential component of the audi tt key case's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the audi etron key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
